Mon Germoir Maison

My home-made germoir.

Today, we are going to talk about sprouted seeds. First of all, because it’s really good but also and especially because it’s full of vitamins. It is really great when you want to vegetalize your diet. It’s a maximum of benefits for a minimum of effort. In the seeds, there is everything for the plant to grow well, in this case, full of vitamins and trace elements. It is the same principle as the egg but 100% vegetable. And, as they are eaten raw, you can enjoy all their benefits. It is really great for your health. You can put them in salads or smoothies.

The only problem with sprouted seeds, in my opinion, is their price in the shops. I find it very expensive for something that is actually very easy to grow yourself. To grow sprouted seeds, you need a germinator, water and seeds. For the seeds, now you can find a lot of mix of seeds to sprout in the supermarkets, on the internet or in the ecological supermarkets. Personally, I recommend radish and mustard. The taste is great and it will really give relief to your salads.

For the germoir, here is my zero waste and zero euros technique.

For this, you need:

  • A glass jar
  • A piece of natural fabric, enough to cover the opening of your glass jar
  • 1 rubber band
  • 1 tablespoon
  • water
  • 2 minutes a day for 4/5 days

We are going to begin by taking a big spoon with soup of seeds and to put them in our glass pot. Then, we fill the jar in the 3/4 of water and we stir the seeds with the spoon in soup. It is to avoid that they make packets but especially so that they are all well soaked with water. After a few seconds, everything should be well mixed.

We will now close our glass jar with our piece of cloth and our rubber band, as in the photo. We will let them soak for 6 to 12 hours. Then we will turn this famous glass jar upside down and place the fabric part on the edge of the sink. Like that, the water will run out quietly. We leave them quiet during 24 hours before filling again the pot to the 3/4 with water. Attention, we do not remove the fabric! Do not open the germinator but let the water pass through the cloth. Once the pot is 3/4 full, turn it upside down and place it back on the edge of your sink. Again, you will leave them for 24 hours before repeating the operation. After a few days, your seeds will look like the ones in the last picture. That’s when they’ll be ready to eat.
