Every cat’s companion has experienced this at one time or another, the pee! And it’s always in a very bad place. The smell is just atrocious and very persistent. We have the impression that they do it on purpose to annoy us but in fact, it’s a little more complicated than that. In this article, I explain why they pee and give you my tips on how to fix and clean up the problem.
A cat that pees outside the litter box has a problem and is trying to tell you. The first and most important thing to do is to go to the vet. Why, because many feline diseases result in urinary problems. If you have an illness, it can get really bad really fast.
If your veterinarian tells you that everything is fine, then the problem is with you. You’ll start by making sure you have the right amount of litter. As I explain in my article ”The ABC’s of cats”, the magic formula of the litter box is the number of cats that live with you + 1. So, if you have two cats for example, you need 3 litter boxes. If you have the right number of litter boxes, you now need to make sure you have the right type of litter box.
You need large litter boxes! It’s very important that they have space. Most commercial litter boxes are too small. I recommend that you get large plastic boxes. You can easily find them at Leroy Merlin for example. It’s perfect as a litter box. I really don’t recommend litter boxes with roofs. Many cats don’t like it. We didn’t have any pee problems for years and one day we decided to buy a high tech litter box with a nice design, very expensive and well, it didn’t fail! We had pee everywhere. We immediately went back to the litter boxes and everything went back to normal. Talk about a bad cat… (hahaha)
Now that you have the perfect litter, you need to be careful about what you put in it. Scented litters are not recommended. Cats are very sensitive to odors. It can really bother them. In addition, they are full of chemicals that can trigger diseases. For me, the best and most healthy is sawdust. It totally absorbs odors and is 100% natural. You can easily find it in pet stores or on the internet. We use Cat’s Best and it works very well. Once it is done, you must also make sure that your litters are well placed. It is necessary that they are with calm and that they can leave it easily. You don’t want them to feel trapped. And above all, they must be clean. Cleanliness for a cat is very important.
It is also very important for him to put his smell everywhere, otherwise he doesn’t feel at home. He marks his territory. He does it by rubbing himself everywhere, especially on the doorsteps. This makes small black traces, these are the pheromones. It is very important to leave him. Otherwise, he won’t feel at home anymore. He can leave or start urinating everywhere to recreate his territory. This is called marking pee. These are small peeces that smell very strong with a small white deposit sometimes. These are hormones. If you are really fed up with these little black marks, I advise you to use the Feliway spray. It is made for that. They are neutral and colorless pheromones. You clean the marks and then you spray the spray in the place of the marks. This way, your cat will have the impression that his mark is still there.
The pee markings, it can also happen when you have several cats. Your cats have territories in your home and sometimes there are little wars. Sometimes they spit on each other and sometimes they pee. It can also happen when a new human or animal arrives in the family. For the pee of marking, I advise you Feliway in diffuser. Again, these are pheromones. It is absolutely not addictive. It is our veterinarian who had advised it to us when we brought back a new cat and it works super well. It relaxes them. It’s like CBD for cats. There are three different types. There’s the classic one for stressed cats. There’s a second formula also for stressed cats because there are some cats that don’t respond to the classic. And finally, there is a third formula for groups of cats. It’s up to you to choose the one that best suits your situation. You put a diffuser in your cat’s favorite room and it should be much better. And yes, sometimes cats are stressed too. But, with this article, patience and a lot of love, everything should be fine.
In the meantime, here are some tips on how to clean urine the zero waste way.
- For upholstery, I recommend Marseille soap, the real thing. It’s really efficient but make sure that there is at least 70% of olive oil, otherwise it’s a bad way.
- For the floor, I clean a first time with white vinegar, just to disinfect. Then I wipe the floor with a mop soaked in water and black soap. I put 3 squirts of black soap for one liter of very hot water, to finish cleaning and nourishing the floor.
- For clothes, my miracle product is sodium percarbonate. One glass of sodium percarbonate for 4/5 liters of water. The percarbonate is effective from 40 degrees but it is most effective from 90 degrees. Soak your clothes in this mixture for a night or a day. You wring out. You put in machine (I refer you to my article “How to make your own laundry” and it is good, it is gone. On the other hand, percarbonate cleans really well so wear gloves when you handle it or wash your hands right after.
There you go, I hope this article will be useful to you and your companions. Whatever you do, don’t put their face in the pee. It doesn’t help. They don’t understand that kind of thing. It will just destroy their trust in you. I’ll be back soon with more articles about cats. Don’t forget to subscribe and send me your questions if you have any.
See you soon!
