The dishwasher is an everyday object, and yet it has a bad press in the zero waste world. It is often criticized for being too polluting, even though it consumes less water than washing dishes by hand. What pollutes most in the dishwasher is its manufacture and the chemicals that are put in it. So, to limit overconsumption, I strongly encourage you to buy reconditioned dishwashers, and for cleaning products, here is my secret weapon. I tested many recipes before finding one that really works for me. This is a powder recipe because personally, I’ve never found a convincing tablet recipe. They never fit well in the wash tub and they don’t dilute completely every other time. So I found my happiness in the powder. It’s a very simple recipe that will save you a lot of money. All the ingredients are natural and very easy to find. The products for the dishwasher, pollute the water enormously. This recipe is a simple and really effective way to reduce your impact on the planet.
For this recipe, you will need:
- 2 airtight jars
- Citric acid
- Coarse salt
- soda crystals
- 1 glass
- 5 minutes of your time
First, you’re going to take one of the two jars and fill it with citric acid. We’ll call it jar number 1. Then we’ll take the second jar, which we’ll call jar number 2. In it, we’re going to put 1 dose of coarse salt and 2 doses of soda crystals. I take the glass to make the doses. A full glass is equivalent to one dose. But you can use any container. The main thing is to respect the number of doses. Then, we close the jar and we shake so that it is well mixed, as on the photograph. And there you go!
At your next dishwasher, you will fill half of the wash tub, with the powder from jar number 1. And the other half, you fill it with the powder from jar number 2. You’ll be hearing from me! For the rinsing liquid, I strongly recommend white vinegar. It’s ecological, economical and it works really well.
That’s it for today. The planet thanks you for trying to change your consumption habits. Don’t hesitate to have a look at our other recipes. I’ll see you soon for new zero waste tutorials and don’t forget to subscribe.
